Be prepared!

Germany allocated € 13.5 million to an innovative bilateral assistance programme, the German Pandemic Preparedness Initiative (PPI). The PPI was implemented between 2009 and 2013 by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). It was designed as a temporary, demand-driven initiative to provide rapid and flexible technical support to partner countries to strengthen their pandemic readiness, in line with the International Health Regulation of 2005.

As the Initiative draws to a close, this publication, showing experiences and lessons learned, has been developed to allow other countries and programmes to replicate or adapt this promising approach.
