BMZ Initiative on Rights-based Family Planning and Maternal Health

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) launched its Rights-Based Family Planning and Maternal Health initiative in 2011 as a way of contributing to the implementation of the G8 Muskoka Initiative on Maternal, Newborn and Child Health and to support the Every Woman Every Child Global Strategy, spearheaded by the UN Secretary-General.

Initially, the BMZ initiative included financial commitments for the period from 2011 to 2015. In support of the Sustainable Development Goals to ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive healthcare services and to end preventable maternal and child deaths, Germany has now pledged to maintain its commitment until at least 2019.
