Hospital Partnerships – Partners Strengthen Health

Hamburg's Bernhard-Nocht-Institut is engaged in a partnership with a hospital in Laos

The programme "Hospital Partnerships - Partners Strengthen Health" supports partnerships between health personnel from German institutions and their colleagues at partner institutions in low and middle-income countries. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) established the Hospital Partnerships Initiative in 2016 with the support of the Else Kröner-Fresenius Foundation. The Initiative supports jointly planned and implemented capacity building measures for the health personnel of partner institutions. The aim is to sustainably improve the capacities of physicians, nursing staff, technical staff and the management of healthcare institutions in partner countries. Hospital partnerships focus on many different fields, ranging from maternal and child health to hospital- and quality management or mental health. All partnership projects are adapted to local needs and the expertise they transfer meets global standards.

The initiative "Hospital Partnerships - Partners strengthen Health" supports nearly 200 hospital partnerships in 51 countries with funding up to 50.000€ over the course of two years and the possibility of follow-up funding.

What is special about the Hospital Partnerships Initiative?

  • Hospital partners in Germany and in partner countries benefit from the new insights and learning they generate in the fields of prevention, diagnostics and treatment
  • The trained healthcare personnel share their new skills with other colleagues
  • They apply and use their new knowledge and skills in their daily work
  • The healthcare practitioners involved in hospital partnerships form an international network, sharing new insights and lessons learned as a community of practice which places healthcare at the forefront of its mission.
