In an era where urbanization, climate change and recurrent infectious disease outbreaks are reshaping the public health landscape across the African continent, countries face not only increasingly complex epidemiological threats but also a critical shortage of expertise required to prevent, detect and respond to them. Yet amid these challenges lies a distinct comparative advantage: a young, technologically adept population driving innovation and digital transformation across the continent. This presents a unique opportunity to leverage digital approaches to strengthen integration across One Health sectors at both continental as well as global levels.

Across Sub-Saharan Africa, the spread of infectious diseases is accelerating under the combined pressures of climate change, urbanisation, ecosystem degradation and other factors. GIZ’s One Health Data Alliance Africa (OHDAA) project, has been focusing on addressing these systemic barriers to unlock the transformational potential of data for health security in Africa and by extension, the world.

The Digital and Financial Literacy Training (DFLT) programme equips women across Sindh (Pakistan) with practical financial and digital skills, enabling them to manage household resources effectively, access government support, and make informed decisions. By integrating climate-smart adaptive practices, the programme helps women prepare for and respond to climate-related shocks such as floods, heat waves, and other extreme weather events, strengthening both household and community resilience.

When cloudbursts devastated parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan, many families lost not only their homes but also their identity documents and access to social protection systems. With support from German Development Cooperation to strengthen Pakistan’s adaptive social protection, Benazir Income Support Programme’s Mobile Registration Vans travelled into cut-off villages to provide on-the-spot registration and ensure that even the most isolated households could reconnect with government support.

In remote regions of Pakistan, distance and mobility barriers—such as the need to travel long distances and bear transport costs—often prevent vulnerable families from reaching Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) offices to register for assistance. To address this, BISP, with support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through GIZ Pakistan, has launched Mobile Registration Vans. These vehicles bring the National Socio-Economic Registry (NSER)—a nationwide database that collects household information to determine eligibility for social protection programmes—directly to people’s doorsteps. This initiative makes inclusion possible for elderly individuals, women, and labourers who might otherwise be left out. The video captures how this innovative outreach is transforming access to social protection in Pakistan.
