The German Last Mile Initiative is supporting partners in Honduras to improve access to quality vaccines and to enable the safe return of children to school through an intensified COVID-19 vaccination campaign. GIZ implements the financed measures through the Back to School through Improved Vaccination Logistics project. Measures are focused on addressing institutional and infrastructural weaknesses in the health and education systems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and by the devastating tropical cyclones Eta and Iota. The two storms, which hit Honduras in October and November 2020, damaged 80 per cent of schools as well as countless health centres. The project aims to rehabilitate school buildings which will also serve as vaccination centres. It also finances technical staff and materials, such as IT equipment, which are needed for vaccination logistics.
