This year’s regional conference of the GIZ Sector Network Health and Social Protection for Asia and Eastern Europe is being organised in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan under the tagline ‘Avicenna and Artificial Intelligence meet on the Silk Road’. A thousand years after the pathbreaking interdisciplinary work of the Central Asian thinker Avicenna, some 120 participants from across Asia and beyond will come together at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Bishkek to engage in their own interdisciplinary exchanges about the promise and challenges of digitalisation in the fields of health and social protection.

Conference delegates will examine current trends and exchange knowledge and experiences about digitalisation in the context of German and global development cooperation. A particular focus will be on the application of new technologies and the opportunities and challenges they present in relation to improving health and social security systems. Invited external specialists and GIZ health and social protection experts from different countries will provide inputs and share experiences on topics such as artificial intelligence, big data, e-governance, e-identity and challenges related to cybersecurity and data management.

Two renowned keynote speakers will set the tone for the discussions:

  • Megan Lam, CEO of Neurum Health, will talk about digital health in the context of China’s health care system.
  • Dr Madis Tiik, CEO of the Estonian E-Health Foundation, will present his country’s journey towards a comprehensive e-governance system.

The conference will promote and facilitate multisectoral exchange and collaboration between GIZ health programmes, their partners, and representatives of regional and international organisations and the private sector.
