Covid-19 is just one of many infectious diseases facing Africa, and as the latest outbreak of Ebola in Guinea shows, it is vital that it does not divert resources and efforts from other on-going challenges.

‘We need to keep an eye on the bigger picture if we want to build sustainable systems for disease surveillance and response’, says Damien Bishop, project manager for GIZ’s regional pandemic preparedness programme in West Africa.

Koudou Lazare, Executive Director of AIMAS, Cote d’Ivoire’s social marketing agency, and his team talk about the impact the corona crisis is having on vital HIV prevention work in a country with an estimated 13,000 to 16,000 AIDS-related deaths in 2019 as opposed to 186 deaths attributed to COVID-19 in the last year.
